One of the best Star Wars comic books launched by Marvel was Darth Vader, a series chronicling the Sith Lord’s struggles to hold onto his position as The Emperor’s right hand following the destruction of the Death Star in A New Hope. That wrapped up not too long ago, but now he’s getting another title.

The difference here, however, is that it will pick up just moments after the end of Revenge of the Sith. Written by Charles Soule with art from Giuseppe Camuncoli, the book is going to revolve around Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader as he’s forced to don the suit needed to keep him alive, despite the fact that it causes him immeasurable pain.

The first story arc looks set to revolve around Vader’s construction of his iconic red lightsaber and Soule had this to say about how that’s likely to play out:

“At the end of Revenge of the Sith, he obviously loses his blue saber when he gets all chopped up and Obi-Wan takes it to eventually give to Luke down the road. So we end up with a character who is known as having this iconic sword, like his magical red sword, but he doesn’t have it yet. So what better way to start a big huge series than with a quest for a magic sword? We’re going to explore the mythology around lightsabers to some degree, which will be very fun. I’m really lucky that I get to tell that story. Seems like a big piece of the puzzle for him.”

That sounds undeniably fascinating, and something that fans will surely enjoy learning about. The Expanded Universe spent plenty of time delving into this period of Vader’s life, but with that no longer canon, Marvel looks set to fill in some serious gaps through this comic book, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.

Darth Vader #1 is set to be released in June, so more details about this upcoming Star Wars series will no doubt find their way online soon enough.
