So it’s come to this. Look at that picture, Valve. This is your doing! That child is now on the streets panhandling because he can’t live up the insanely high expectations you’ve placed for him. How can you live with yourself? I hope that when you fall asleep on top of your massive piles of money tonight the face of this brave young man haunts you enough that you can’t eat your second bowl of caviar. God speed, random blond haired kid I found on the internet.
Your daily reminder: If it’s not a Daily Deal or a Flash Sale, hold off on buying it until the 22nd. It’s almost guaranteed that as soon as you buy in, it’s going to be cheaper the next day. Steam seems to know these things.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent – $4.99 – Amnesia is one of, if not the best, horror games that I have ever played. The game has the ability to wreak absolute havoc on your imagination, essentially turning you into your own worst enemy. The game obviously isn’t an AAA title, but that’s really part of the charm. Frictional Games was able to work within their limited budget and create something truly spellbinding. I would recommend that you play this at 2 in the morning with the lights out, but after being told by my neighbors that my girlish screaming was keeping them up, I had to change my habits. This game is absolutely terrifying and is decidedly worth the five bucks. Pick this one up immediately and know that I’m wishing you the best of luck.
Sniper Elite V2 – $24.99 – The ultra-realistic sniping simulator isn’t a bad game, but it didn’t offer enough to justify its price tag when it was released. Even with this discount, a lot of gamers will feel cheated by the slow paced game and short campaign. The bullet mechanics are spot on, and the gory kill cams are extremely rewarding, especially after pulling off a particularly difficult shot. You can read our full review of the title here, but I highly recommend trying out the demo to see if this type of game will appeal to you.
Plants Vs Zombies – $2.49 –I’m always shocked to see Plants Vs Zombies on sale. Not because it’s a bad game, but I find it hard to believe that there are people on this planet who haven’t already played it. The casual puzzle game is a fun distraction. It’s perfect for when you only have a few minutes to kill but is also engaging enough to keep you glued to your monitor for an hour. I’m not really proud of how much time I’ve spent killing zombies with peas, and I’m sure the problem will get worse before it gets better.
The Witcher II – $15.99 –The Witcher II is one of the best RPGs to come to the PC in years. In fact, it was our PC Game Of The Year last year. Everything is done to perfection here. The story is compelling, your choices carry weight, and the environment is drop dead gorgeous. It is a bit tasking, so you may want to make sure your computer meets the minimum specs. I would have liked to see this go just a bit cheaper, but as stellar of a title as this is I really can’t be upset. This is one of those games that you might find yourself still playing by the time the Winter Sale comes around.
Alan Wake Franchise – $9.99 – 10 AM EST 7/14/12 – Alan Wake is a bit of a favorite around here. The horror game’s immersion is second to none, and the narration should be used as a benchmark for a lot of future titles. The story is told over the course of six episodes and would have had no problem finding success as a suspenseful thriller on primetime TV. The game has had phenomenal critical success, but failed to make a massive impact on the general market, leaving it as somewhat of a cult classic. It won’t haunt you the same way Amnesia will, but it’s definitely worth checking out.
Fallout New Vegas – $4.99 – 11 AM EST 7/16/12 – My god, do I love Fallout: New Vegas. New Vegas is precisely the game that Fallout 3 should have been in the first place, and by that I mean less attention paid to gloom and doom and a lot more dark comedy. Everything in the game is perfectly in line with Fallout lore and the amazing attention to the minor details is astounding. I really recommend picking up some of the DLC as well, the ultimate edition is only $9.99. If you’re a fan of open world RPGs (think Skyrim) but are looking for something with more of post-apocalyptic feel to it, this is the exact game you’ve been looking for.
Krater – $7.49 – Krater tries so hard to be a competent action RPG but just falls flat on so many levels. What should be a solid title has so many misfires that it’s hard to explain all of them in a short synopsis. It takes two huge steps back every single time it starts to meander towards brilliance and can be a chore to play at times. I’d hold on to that money and save it for something more deserving.
Indie Bundle VII – $9.99 – This is one of the stronger bundles we’re going to see during this sale.
Demolition Inc. is a charming little puzzle game where you take on the role of a one man alien demolition crew tasked with leveling the earth. You’ll be given a few tools that you can use to wreak havoc in the city. Lay down some explosive cows in front of an oil slick to cause a car to go careening into the closest building setting off a comical series of explosions. It’s a game that ends up being way more fun that it has any right being.
Have you ever felt bad for the dragons when playing Skyrim? Than have I got a title for you. In Hoard you play as the dragon as you raze villages, kidnap princesses, ignite knights and slay thieves. The game isn’t very deep, but what it does it does well. The multiplayer is a blast and stealing from your friends treasury as he’s looting a city never gets old.
Swords And Soldiers is a casual action/tower defense game. While it has a charming personality and a vibrant color scheme, but it’s not the deepest of all titles. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it on its own, but it’s a nice little addition to the bundle.
To round out this bundle we have two very different flight games. Wings of Prey is a fairly decent WWII shooter, but since there are so few good flight simulators out there this may be worth your attention. SOL: Exodus on the other hand, is a boring space shooter with really nothing worth talking about.
