Tyler Hoechlin To Play Superman On The CW’s Supergirl

It's safe to say that Supergirl will make a tremendous impact on The CW's primetime lineup, which is already heavily populated with superheroes, when the Man of Steel himself joins the action for the first two episodes of the second season. Sure, we may have received some glimpses of Superman's silhouette or seen his boots at points during the first season, but that's just not quite the same as seeing one of the most recognizable pop culture icons in all of their glory.

It’s safe to say that Supergirl will make a tremendous impact on The CW’s primetime lineup, which is already heavily populated with superheroes, when the Man of Steel himself joins the action for the first two episodes of the second season. Sure, we may have received some glimpses of Superman’s silhouette or seen his boots at points during the first season, but that’s just not quite the same as seeing one of the most recognizable pop culture icons in all of their glory.

As it turns out, Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf, Road to Perdition) will don the cape and tights, becoming the first man to play Big Blue on the small screen since Tom Welling of Smallville fame. I must admit that he certainly looks the part, so here’s hoping that he can bring a certain gravitas to the role considering that it’s already been established on the show that this iteration of Superman has been on the job for some time.

Apparently Exectutive Producer Andrew Kreisberg has complete faith in him, and had the following to say about the casting:

“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

If Kreisberg has that kind of confidence, I feel as though I can breathe a sigh of relief. Let’s not forget that fans debated if a little known Grant Gustin could embody The Flash, and now many can’t accept anyone but him as the character.

It has also been said the ability to use Superman in the “Arrowverse” is a result of the recent reorganization at Warner Bros. DC’s Trinity – Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman – were previously off limits for television properties to use and now, most fortunate for us, red tape between divisions seems less restrictive – so perhaps this will open the door for more superheroes to come to prime time that we hadn’t thought possible before. I just wouldn’t count on Batman showing up any time soon, as he’s tied up with Gotham.
