An X-Man of a very different kind, Michael Fassbender plays Brandon, a New Yorker forced to confront his serious sex addiction when his fragile sister (Carey Mulligan) unexpectedly shows up and squats on his couch.
If there’s any filmmaker alive that’s more suited to exploring sexual psychoanalysis and the related theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung than the man behind movies like Crash (the sex ‘n’ traffic accidents one) and Videodrome, we’ve yet to meet him.
George Clooney officially passes the impish matinee idol torch to Ryan Gosling in this smart, hella-cool (does Clooney waste his time on any other kind of movie these days?) political drama.
50/50 will mark the second time that Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard have worked together in a movie and not shared screen time with one another. Although they really want to be on set together, it never seems to work out.
With an exploitation-friendly title like Machine Gun Preacher you’d think this movie would be the soul brother of Hobo With A Shotgun. Unfortunately, that is not so.
Over the past 6 years, in addition to being a steadily working comedic actor, Seth Rogen has produced 7 films. Beginning in 2005, Rogen acted as co-producer on Judd Apatow’s The 40 Year Old Virgin and has continued to have a hand in the production of many of his recent acting projects. It’s an intriguing idea to parallel the cut-throat world of butter carving competitions (yes, they do exist in real life) with the no-holds-barred arena of politics. Sadly, the comedic elements of Butter are just too soft to compare to other far funnier films of its ilk like Drop Dead Gorgeous, Election or To Die For.
It should be no surprise that a collaboration between everyone’s favourite big screen charmer George Clooney and Alexander Payne, the man behind such recent classics as Election and Sideways, is great. What is surprising is that The Descendants manages to even surpass those stratospheric expectations most fans will have walking into the theatre and cement its spot on many people’s Top 10 films of the year list.
Following the Spanish flu epidemic and World War I, it makes sense that, as the opening moments of The Awakening tell us, “This is a time for ghosts.” We’re talking bump in the night, see a dark shadow out of the corner of your eye ghosts that stalk the hallways of gothic stone buildings, wailing and menacing any living creature that dares set foot in their territory. This is the world in which Writer Stephen Volk and Writer/Director Nick Murphy have chosen to set their creepy and only slightly derivative supernatural spook fest.
