Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 Heads To Space In New Behind The Scenes Image

As Inhumans takes its usual Fall slot on ABC, fans are having to wait until the winter for the next season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Given that the series only escaped cancellation by the scruff of its neck last time, it looks like season 5 could end up being the final hurrah for the MCU spinoff show as well. That remains unconfirmed for now, but at the very least, this seems to have given it a push to explore new territories, as hinted at in a new behind the scenes image.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. transmedia producer Geoffrey Colo was on hand to share an exciting snap from the set on his Twitter account this week. As you can see below, it features a shot of space through what looks to be a space station window. Colo captioned it: “My current view looking out a window on the set of @Marvel#AgentsofSHIELD #SneakPeek.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve been teased that the guys and gals of S.H.I.E.L.D. would travel off world in season 5. The fourth season finale previously saw Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson end up on a mysterious space station, so it was obvious that this was going to be explored further down the line.

Comic book readers are theorizing that the series could be about to introduce S.W.O.R.D. – the off-shoot of S.H.I.E.L.D. which is based on a satellite orbiting the Earth and is sworn to protect the world from extraterrestrial threats. Big name heroes such as Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman are among those who have been on S.W.O.R.D.’s payroll.

All we know for sure at the moment, though, is that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to dip its shoes into Star Trek territory next year. This bodes well for season 5, as the series has always stretched itself in various different directions in a bid to give each season a different flavour. Going cosmic next time around should definitely do just that.

We expect to find out more about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 at next month’s New York Comic-Con, so be sure to stay tuned.
