And if you’re at all familiar with Arrow, then you know that series in particular is capable of being far beyond intense at this point.

As of last night’s episode, Oliver Queen is now on trial for any possible crimes he’s committed as the Emerald Archer, but it appears as though a returning Tommy Merlyn may be able to get him off the hook. Regardless of that, the newly surfaced synopsis for this season’s finale, the ominously titled “Life Sentence,” forces us to think the road ahead won’t be so smooth.

Here’s what to expect on May 17:

THE EPIC SEASON FINALE OF ARROW — With a new ally on his team, Oliver (Stephen Amell) engages Diaz (guest star Kirk Acevedo) in an epic final battle. James Bamford directed the episode written by Wendy Mericle & Marc Guggenheim (#623).  Original airdate 5/17/2018.

Understandably, the network is being cryptic, but it’s fair to surmise that the “new ally” could very well be Black Siren. With each passing week, we get more hints that she’ll soon be redeemed and it’s become quite apparent that she wants out of Ricardo Diaz’s operation. Plus, there’s the matter that Caity Lotz will be returning as Sara Lance for the concluding episode, so perhaps that’ll provide Earth-2’s Laurel with some sisterly incentive.

Still, it’s hard to ignore the title of “Life Sentence,” which makes one recall the producers teasing a game-changing cliffhanger to come. Granted, whatever that may be remains to be seen, but you have to admit that Oliver being definitively outed as the Green Arrow – or being sent to the clink until the beginning of season 7 – would be quite the paradigm shift.

Arrow airs on Thursday nights on The CW.
