Has A Casting Call Revealed The Villain Of Luke Cage Season 2?

Luke Cage landed with a bang last year, with Netflix confirming it’d be returning for a second season almost immediately after the first was released. With that in the can, production is now beginning on season 2 of Luke Cage and there’s been some tantalizing casting calls leaked, courtesy of That Hashtag Show:

Byron: 30 – 45, 6’0 or taller, Jamaican, but open to Black Caribbean or African Descent. The smartest man any room, the most effortlessly powerful man in any situation. A natural leader, brimming with resentment but focused on justice. Physically fit and wildly intelligent. Speaks with a native accent from Jamaica / Caribbean / Africa, etc.* SERIES REGULAR

Tamara mid-20’s – early 30’s, African American, female, earthy. A brilliant, confident business owner who prides herself on her independence. As much as she tries to stay far from trouble, it seems to always find her.* ACTORS MUST BE STRONG SINGERS. SERIES REGULAR

THS has done a bit of guessing about which character Byron might be, and they’re betting on Bushmaster, a recurring snake-themed villain for Luke Cage, with a more tentative guess that Tamara is a gender-swapped re-working of Luke Cage’s long-lost brother. Neither seems like a really convincing answer to me, but then again, Power Man doesn’t have the widest rogues gallery.

I was hoping we’d finally see my favourite Luke Cage villain make his way to the screen, but it seems I may have to wait a while longer to see a big budget re-imagining of amphibian gangster Mr. Fish, a small town crook who becomes exposed to radioactive material and is turned into a half-man, half-fish creature. He parlays his grotesque appearance into becoming a crime boss, with his superhuman talents (according to my Marvel Encyclopaedia) being “enhanced strength and a fish-like appearance.” Come on Netflix, Mr. Fish could be the new Joker! He just needs a chance to shine.

More on Luke Cage season 2 as we have it.
