The cold holiday season brings with it a lot of gifts, but few are quite as hotly anticipated as the upcoming Doctor Who hourlong Christmas special, entitled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.” With its release set for Christmas day on BBC One, the UK TV station has now released its first official trailer, which reveals the new mysterious superhero vigilante known as The Ghost.
As revealed in an official synopsis, this new Christmas special sees The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) joining forces with the masked superhero (Justin Chatwin), along with Nardole (Matt Lucas) and an investigative reporter, to fight evil brain-swapping aliens during an epic New York City-based adventure. Because what would Christmas be without some brain swapping aliens, right? Not a good one, at least. Will The Doctor stop the aliens? Will he save Manhattan? Will The Time Lord find out who’s behind the mask of The Ghost? These are all questions that will be answered on December 25th.
Written by Steven Moffat, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” also stars Charity Wakefield, Tomiwa Edun, Aleksander Jovanovic and Logan Huffman. Having made a good impression during his stint on Shameless, it’ll be interesting to see how Chatwin fares on the uber popular British sci-fi series. The Showtime drama showcases his comedic chops, and it’s easy to see Moffat and his crew playing against the actor’s good looks hidden by such a prominent mask.
“The Return of Doctor Mysterio” will be directed by Ed Bazalgette. How this special will fare compared to past Doctor Who Christmas specials is left undetermined, but the new location (it’s actually shot in Wales, but still…) and characters should definitely make for an interesting and exciting adventure.
The newest Doctor Who Christmas special airs at 5:45 PM on BBC One on December 25.
