One of the few redeeming qualities of George Lucas’ Prequel Trilogy to Star Wars is Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of the young Obi-Wan Kenobi. And if you’re a fan of the Scottish actor’s role in those films, we’ve got some good news for you.
Rumors of an Obi-Wan based project have been circulating since Disney bought Lucasfilm back in 2013. At first, there was speculation of a standalone movie, but the narrative’s since shifted to an exclusive TV show on the House of Mouse’s upcoming streaming service. Though We Got This Covered first reported on this back in May, two additional sources have now informed Cinelinx that McGregor’s officially signed a contract to return as the iconic Jedi Master.
Not only will this be fulfilling the dreams of many Star Wars fans, but for McGregor as well, who’s been open to returning to the role for years.
One thing to note about the timing of this news is the fact that D23 is only one week away. The highly anticipated event will surely unveil many of the company’s plans for the future, as well as Disney Plus, and perhaps an official Kenobi announcement will be a part of that.
But even if it’s not, there’s a whole lot the studio has to talk about. Given its recent acquisitions, including Fox and Hulu, Disney has several properties to answer for, and Star Wars fans in attendance will have the opportunity to attend a panel for The Mandalorian, among other titles.
While nothing’s confirmed just yet, we’d like to know your thoughts on all this. Are you excited to see McGregor return as Obi-Wan Kenobi? And how do you think his story will be picked back up? Be sure to drop us a comment down below and share your ideas.
