We’ve good news and bad coming out of Freeform today. After learning of the network’s somewhat surprising decision to push ahead with a second season of supernatural drama Shadowhunters, it’s been confirmed that Switched at Birth will bow out after season 5.

Bringing the series to an end after a total of 103 episodes, creator and producer Lizzy Weiss confirmed that the fifth season would mark the last hurrah for Madeline and Daphne.

Said Weiss:

“This season of #SwitchedatBirth will be our final one. We are ending the show after an amazing 103 episodes with pride, love, and gratitude.”

That adds an extra sense of drama to the upcoming season 5, which is slated for a premiere on Freeform during the summer. Back to reprise their roles for the final time are Vanessa Marano and Katie Leclerc, who anchor the teen drama as two young girls who were, well, Switched at Birth.

First hitting the small screen in 2011, Switched at Birth drew the support of a passionate fanbase during its stint on the waves, even earning critical acclaim for its portrayal of those with hearing impairments.

Expect the fifth and final season of Switched at Birth – one which will comprise ten episodes in total – to hit Freeform during the summer months.
