Mad Men star Jon Hamm will be directing the fifth season premiere, which will be arriving March 2012. Apparently Hamm is looking forward to the gig, saying he’s approaching it “with a mixture of utter fear and excitement.” This will be the first time Hamm steps behind the camera so it’ll be interesting to see how he does and if he comes off as successful as his co-star John Slattery was when he took a stab at directing.

“The wheels have officially been set in motion to make that happen,” Hamm tells TVLine. “It’s a very exciting challenge that I’m looking forward to with a mixture of utter fear and excitement. It helps to have people you know and trust surrounding you. We’ve been fortunate enough to have very little turnover not only in our cast but in our crew. I watched Slattery do it, and he handled it with such grace and ability and ease,” he continues, before adding with a laugh, “I figured if he can do it, s–t, I can do it too.”

That being said, this kind of thing happens all the time. Stars of television shows always get a chance to direct, it’s a pretty common thing. So perhaps this shouldn’t be too special. Still, Mad Men is one of television’s best shows and any news regarding it is worth posting. The season five premiere is quite far away but it’s still worth getting excited about. Wouldn’t you say?
