Armed with a formidable assault rifle, Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s leering sociopath flashes a manic grin in the latest image for The Walking Dead season 7.

This still, which arrives on the heels of those pics spotlighting the ensemble cast, hails from Entertainment Weekly, and when the outlet quizzed Morgan about Negan’s chances against the Governor (played by David Morrissey), the actor claimed that said contest wouldn’t really be a contest at all.

“It’s not even close. I mean, I love David Morrissey, but he wouldn’t stand a chance. Wouldn’t stand a chance. I’d put Negan up against anybody. He’s super smart and there’s no filter, no fear. The Governor was a little bit wack. Negan’s got it together. It wouldn’t even be close. And I’m sorry, ‘cause I really love David. He’s awesome. I worked with him for a year and there’s just not a better guy. But Negan versus the Governor wouldn’t be close.”

Due to make his return in late October, season 7 will waste no time in resolving the infamous cliffhanger, which found our heroes at the mercy of Negan and his gnarly weapon of choice, Lucille.

Speaking of which, it is Andrew Lincoln who once again leads the charge against the living and the dead as Rick Grimes, joined by Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Steven Yeun, Danai Gurira, Chandler Riggs, Sonequa Martin-Green, Michael Cudlitz, Josh McDermitt, Ross Marquand, Christian Serratos and Khary Payton as Ezekiel.

Come October 23, AMC will welcome the return of its flesh-munching flagship when The Walking Dead season 7 premieres.
