Pretty Little Liars Review: “Who’s In The Box?” (Season 4, Episode 14)

Fans of Pretty Little Liars have been waiting impatiently for the return of PLL since the big Halloween episode tease when the Liars discovered once and for all that Alison (Sasha Pieterse) was still alive - sans any real explanation of how that's even possible. It's a good thing there's still half of season four left for the writers to try to explain this one to us, and considering how long it took us to get to this point, even that might not be enough time.

Fans of Pretty Little Liars have been waiting impatiently for the return of PLL since the big Halloween episode tease when the Liars discovered once and for all that Alison (Sasha Pieterse) was still alive – sans any real explanation of how that’s even possible. It’s a good thing there’s still half of season four left for the writers to try to explain this one to us, and considering how long it took us to get to this point, even that might not be enough time.

If you’ve been paying any attention at all over the course of the series, you’ve already realized that this is a pretty serious curve ball to the established storyline. The Liars have been searching for Ali’s killer for all this time and have now come to find out that she’s not even dead. Plus, they’ve done so while being harassed (err, possibly not a strong enough word) at every turn by a mystery psychopath (no offense, Mona), which has taken a considerable toll on all the girls. If you’re ever looking for an example of grace under pressure, Pretty Little Liars has provided viewers with more than enough.

Although it was pretty obvious this reveal was where season four was heading, it also opens up a whole new set of questions that now need to be answered. The ability of this show to compound one mystery on top of another is one of the greatest and most frustrating features that PLL has to offer, and they take full advantage of it.

This episode addressed, or at least started to, one of the biggest post-Alison being alive questions – if the body they found wasn’t Ali’s, then who’s was it? I brought up this question before the big reveal, but now that it’s less hypothetical it looks like we might get an answer to it (eventually).
