Promising a “darker, more theatrical” adventure, Adult Swim has officially slated the fifth season of Samurai Jack for premiere on Saturday, March 11th.

Much to the delight of series creator Genndy Tartakovsky, the announcement was made shortly after a recent promo for Adult Swim’s upcoming slate of content. Tartakovsky, who first teased Jack’s return to the airwaves back in 2015, has spent much of the intervening years fielding questions from fans regarding Cartoon Network’s revival. That interest stems from the director’s attempts at engineering a feature-length movie based on the Samurai Jack universe, but those valiant efforts ultimately came up short. Instead, Genndy Tartakovsky doubled down on getting Jack back onto the small screen, and the result is a 10-episode fifth season that’s set to take place some 50 years after the finale of Samurai Jack season 4.

Expect Tartakovsky and Co. to portray Jack through a different lens, as our time-travelling hero sets about destroying the elusive, shape-shifting demon known as Aku.

“I think we’re going to see [Jack] in a new light because we’re going to see him from a different standpoint. In the original series he was very heroic person on a very rigid quest. Now we pick up with him and it’s many years after the fact and he’s a little bit lost. So it’s a story of redemption and him trying to find who he is again.”

It’s official: Adult Swim and Toonami’s new season of Samurai Jack will premiere on Saturday, March 11th at 11:30 pm. Will you be tuning in to catch a glimpse of Tartakovsky’s time-traveling prince back in action? Do let us know.
