Sons of Anarchy Review: “Poenitentia” (Season 6, Episode 3)

Jax's (Charlie Hunnam) decision making process has been somewhat compromised by his emotional baggage in the last few episodes of Sons of Anarchy. He has put the best interest of the club in the corner, and replaced the contents of the pedestal with his own personal agenda. As the club becomes more visibly affected by the recent choices made by leadership, Jax is starting to come around. Although he still makes it very apparent that his family is his number one priority, which we saw in his loaded threat to Toric (Donal Logue), he also gives one up for the team when he lets his grudge against Clay (Ron Perlman) fall to the sidelines in favor of severing ties with the Irish.

Jax’s judgement is only going to continue to be clouded as season six moves forward. Tara (Maggie Siff) is not only facing a lengthy jail sentence for her role in the murder of Toric’s sister, but she is officially pregnant with child number 2. Adding a pregnancy storyline on top of her current legal drama, and her possibly pending divorce, means that things are only going to get more ridiculous in the Teller household. If Tara doesn’t beat the charges, she’ll be delivering her baby in shackles – I can’t imagine that there’s anything more uncomfortable than being pregnant while incarcerated.

There’s a certain sense of irony that she might deliver under those circumstances, however. You may remember that Jax was in jail the first time she was with child, and it was Gemma (Katey Sagal) in the delivery room instead. The only significant difference seems to be that Jax trusted her with the kids, and that sentiment apparently doesn’t go both ways. Tara has certainly been flighty with her emotions through most of her run on Sons of Anarchy, so that twist of events should come as no surprise – it’s been a never ending game of she loves him, she loves him not. And, honestly if it was to come to an abrupt halt at some point, I’m not sure I would miss it.

It’s never been a question of whether or not Jax is a complicated character. He lives his life as a series of unfortunate events mixed with momentary happiness. Why Tara assumes that something is going to change at the drop of a hat, or consistently makes decisions that undermine the person that she chose to be with, is a redundant theme that has lost all its appeal. If Tara is that set on divorcing Jax, which at this point is only the case under the shadow of a guilty verdict, then why even contemplate the thought of having another child. She could have just as easily handled the situation independent of anyone knowing, and alleviated a great deal of additional stress for everyone involved.

It would be nice to believe that Tara still maintains some of the qualities she possessed earlier on in the Sons of Anarchy run that made her more likeable, but she seems to have as much trouble being consistent as she does making decisions that don’t pull her further down the illusive rabbit hole. In fact, I would even go as far as to say that she is beginning to make Gemma look less like the manipulative control freak who moonlights as a puppet master, and more like a literal stripped-down version of Mother Theresa, keeper of the family unit. It doesn’t hurt that Gemma’s maternal instincts still cast a wide enough net to catch Wendy (Drea de Matteo) despite their sorted history, and Wendy’s obvious ulterior motives.

Have you turned on Tara or do you still got her back? And, what would Bobby (Mark Boone Junior) say about Jax’s latest trade – Tig for Clay? Let us know in the comment section below!

Random Thoughts:

  • Bobby has enough members to start his own nomad charter of Sons of Anarchy, but it doesn’t seem like he’s done recruiting.
  • Of course, it’s always the more innocent of the characters that take the most heat. Nero (Jimmy Smits) is going to have a hell of a time talking himself out of this one.
  • I really wanted to like Wendy this season. I was prepared to, and welcomed it. Now, I’m just crossing my fingers that the worst case scenario of her acting job doesn’t land someone in a body bag.
  • Is it just me or is Gemma being uncharacteristically nice lately? Well, to most people, that is.
  • How long will it take for karma catch up with Toric?
  • Not a big fan of either new SOA character – Colette Jane (Kim Dickens) and Charles Barosky (Peter Weller) – but love the name Colette.

 Until next episode.
