Here’s How Star Wars Rebels Sets Up The Next Animated Series

After four seasons, Star Wars Rebels came to an end last night as the triple-length finale brought the adventures of the Ghost crew to a close. While that's sad news for the show's fans, at least all the signs are pointing to another animated series set in the galaxy far, far away arriving in the not too distant future. And Rebels' last episode might just have sowed the seeds for it.

After four seasons, Star Wars Rebels came to an end last night as the triple-length finale brought the adventures of the Ghost crew to a close. While that’s sad news for the show’s fans, at least all the signs are pointing to another animated series set in that galaxy far, far away arriving in the not too distant future. And Rebels‘ last episode might just have sowed the seeds for it.

The finale sees Ezra Bridger achieving his goal of freeing Lothal from the Empire’s clutches. His ingenious plan to take out the imperial fleet of Star Destroyers with a herd of Purrgil, alien whale-like creatures that can travel at lightspeed, pays off – but with a price. Grand Admiral Thrawn’s ship is caught up in the attack and teleported far, far away, with Ezra still on board.

In a coda that fast forwards through the events of the Original Trilogy and goes straight to the aftermath of Return of the Jedi, we see that the Ghost crew are still dedicated to finding their lost friend. Specifically, Sabine Wren and Ahsoka Tano decide to set off into the galaxy to look for Ezra.

If this seems eerily similar to the set-up of The Force Awakens, in which the Resistance are looking for the missing Luke Skywalker, it could be deliberate. Evidence points to the follow-up animated series being titled Star Wars Resistancewhich heavily hints that the show will be set in the run-up to the Sequel Trilogy.

What this reveals, then, is that Luke likely isn’t the only Jedi still around by this point in Star Wars history, with both Ezra and Ahsoka alive as well, even if their whereabouts are unaccounted for. With that in mind, could Resistance see Ahsoka, Sabine and maybe Ezra help the renewed rebellion face off against the First Order?

It’s also worth pointing out that the flashforward heavily hints that Hera Syndulla’s had a son with the late Kanan, named Jacen. Fans of the Legends universe may recognize the name from Jacen Solo, Han and Leia’s evil son in that continuity who inspired Kylo Ren. Could Resistance explore the grown-up Jacen’s switch to the Dark Side?

We’ll have to wait and see where this all goes, but for now, tell us, were you happy with how Star Wars Rebels ended? Be sure to drop a comment down below with your thoughts.
