Are you ready for a new TV show about Superman’s…grandfather? That’s the premise of Krypton, the long in development Syfy series which has finally been given a pilot order by the network.

Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, Krypton follows Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.

Despite being somewhat unnecessary in the already crowded superhero TV show scene, it’s an undeniably interesting premise and certainly has potential if handled well. After all, the Krypton set scenes in Man of Steel were hailed as a highlight of the film, and while this series likely won’t be able to recreate that CGI heavy world, the sequence proved that stories set on Superman’s home can work.

“Krypton is one of the most iconic stories in the comic book universe,” said NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s Bill McGoldrick. “In the talented hands of David S. Goyer and the DC Entertainment/Warner Horizon Television team, this exciting Syfy project will take viewers back to Superman’s home to show how the timeless legend began.”

Assuming the pilot goes well, we’ll no doubt see Krypton on the air this Fall.
