Teen Wolf Review: “More Bad Than Good” (Season 3, Episode 14)

I think it's safe to say that for the foreseeable future, Teen Wolf is going to be running two parallel narratives. One of which will revolve around Scott (Tyler Posey) and the supernatural mess back in Beacon Hills, and the other one will keep following Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) and his escapades on the road (err, wherever he currently is). This will simultaneously give fans what they want and leave them metaphorically holding their breath until these stories once again intersect somewhere down the line in a very contrived, yet satisfying reunion episode.

There was a big to-do after the summer finale about whether or not Tyler Hoechlin’s character, Derek, would be returning, and in what capacity, for the second half of the season, now that he’s no longer an Alpha. We already knew that he was leaving town with Cora (Adelaide Kane), but the silver lining was definitely finding out that he took Peter (Ian Bohen) along with them. I doubt a family reunion is exactly what he needed at that moment, but we’ve seen the fringe benefits of being an Omega before and they’re even less attractive than spending quality time with your homicidal, recently resurrected uncle.

Although I predicted that Derek would return to the show fashionably late into the remaining 12 episodes, I’d much rather get some screen time with him now than have been right on that count. And, whatever trouble he’s found since leaving town will almost surely follow him home, leading to an impressive change of pace somewhere along the line.

We had a small taste of where they ended up (or at least Derek and Peter) on the last episode, and More Bad Than Good pretty much sums up their current situation. From what I can tell, they are/were being held in a Spanish-speaking country – which isn’t super far-fetched since the show is set in California – and, we know that their captives are looking for a she-wolf. Since Cora is missing in action and there’s a large chunk of her life still unaccounted for, logic dictates that she’s the most obvious suspect.

Even this far from home, both Derek and Peter’s reputation precedes them. The woman in charge pegged Derek for the loyal one and Peter for the vain one at their first encounter, and I have to say she certainly wasn’t too far off. This isn’t the first time that either one of them have been outsmarted or taken down by brute strength, but whatever led them into this situation, it seems that they wanted something out of it – and so does Deucalion (Gideon Emery). Why else would he hire someone to rescue Derek?

There’s still a lot about how Derek’s been spending the last few weeks (months) that we haven’t been clued in on, but one things for sure, he’s not going anywhere. How long do you think it will be before Derek heads home, and what do you think will bring him there?  Let us know all your theories about Teen Wolf in the comment section below!

Random Thoughts:

  • I thought Stiles had a monopoly on the best lines the writers of Teen Wolf had to offer, but I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that Isaac is in contention for that spot.
  • More shirtless Derek scenes, please and thank you.
