True Blood Review: “At Last” (Season 6, Episode 4)

This week's episode of True Blood reminded me why it's such a hit with its rabid fanbase, despite the major ups and downs its faced in recent seasons. Even though they're all beautiful and capable, none of the characters ever make their situations better for themselves. Sunday nights have become showcases for what not to do when lives are on the line, and vampires, humans, wolves, shifters and faeries alike all make horrible decisions. Nothing is more entertaining than watching our favorite characters shoot themselves in the foot.

Dr. Takahashi is given his own lab in Bill’s basement in hopes of creating the new Tru Blood from the faerie blood taken from the girls with a fancy new bracelet blood extractor. This presents a problem since their red, red krovvy has an extremely short half-life. Jess is in charge of making sure the girls don’t leave, but you know what happens when you leave four young faeries with a hungry vampire? Yeah, she leaves a bloody mess where they used to be, but if they end up somehow still being alive, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Meanwhile, Andy’s on the hunt for his girls, and by the end of the episode it looks like he might have figured out who took them. With the creepy look Bill gave him after asking about his girls, is it really that much of a mystery?

Sam uses his five minutes to help Nicole escape from the wolves and hide out while sending Lafayette away for his own safety. The wolves pretty much devoured all of Nicole’s friends, and they’re hitting the trail hard for her, Sam and Emma. Alcide has pretty much taken on the role of head douchebag, but if it means more Robert Patrick hanging around in the background, I can dig it. In the end, Sam and Nicole hook up in their hotel room. Remember how Luna died like two days ago? She’s not even cold yet and Sam has moved on. Good for him I guess?

But what’s True Blood without Sookie? Her story finally picked up with the reveal that Ben is Warlow, which surprised absolutely nobody. The lack of characterization from the past three episodes made it clear that he was more than just some faerie, but a faerie vampire? Can any two creatures mix together and raise hell in Bon Temps? Jason and Grandpa Niall go to confront him, leading to Jason being glamoured and forgetting the whole thing. Niall is spared, although Warlow tosses him through a portal to whatever world he came from.

Sookie, meanwhile, invites Ben to dinner to test him, putting silver in his food. Of course nothing happens, and as they start to make out, she makes her super death ball behind his back and calls him Warlow. For once, Sookie is the only person in the entire episode to get something right. It only took her six seasons, too.

So far this season of True Blood has turned into a highlight reel of how not to react to any of the situations presented, but at least Sookie’s storyline is getting pushed forward. I still stand by the fact that having only ten episodes this season was a good decision, since reveals aren’t being saved until the last few moments. Midseason episodes used to suck all of the momentum out of the premiere, but so far this season has been hurtling along pretty well.

It’s just a shame that everybody is pretty well screwed at this point. Bill is going to have a talk with Chris Hansen soon, Jess may have killed all hope for vampires walking in the sun, Sam is too busy having I’m-so-sad-Luna-died sex to do anything productive, Eric’s retaliation fizzled out, and Jason is clueless to just about everything. When Sookie is the only character doing well on True Blood, maybe it’s time to cut the others some slack.
