On this week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, Elena (Nina Dobrev) is not taking matters laying down, she is up with the morning rays and ready to train to defend herself from vampires. Yes, she is taking up training with Alaric (Matt Davis).  Stefan (Paul Wesley) has flipped his switch, under the influence of Klaus, and Elena is still refusing to be the victim.

The first day of school brings painful memories to all the new seniors – Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) boyfriend, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), is seeing the ghosts of his ex-girlfriends, Caroline’s (Candice Accola) new boyfriend, Tyler, is now a werewolf/vampire hybrid, and Elena is facing an anniversary reminder that no one wants to remember.

In a twist of epic proportions, the return of Stefan means more than a few unwanted house guests. The last time I checked the house was still in Elena’s name but the rules seem to have changed since Rebekah (Claire Holt) waltzed right in – and neither brother is thrilled at this new development.

Tyler (Michael Trevino) is slightly thrilled at his new “gift,” and his bodyguard Rebekah, is sticking around to smooth the transition..and maybe more.

Meanwhile, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena have found a new reason to work together, as if they needed one, and it looks like things are just starting to heat up. How much longer will Elena be able to resist his surge of hot promises before she breaks?

The bonfire marks the first senior event of the year and the gang is making the most of it. The first meeting about bringing down Stefan is interrupted by Tyler, who in another huge plot twist, is now loyal to his creator, Klaus. This brings the total number of major problems in Mystic Falls to 3.

Number 4 is on its way though. Vicky (Kayla Ewell) has convinced Matt (Zach Roerig) to help resurrect her, but leaves out some important information.  She has made a deal with a witch to even the balance and now that she’s back from the dead, she has one mission – to kill Elena.

In a startling move, Elena falls for Stefan – literally – and it gives Alaric the opportunity to take Stefan out of the game. Vicky shows up and all hell breaks lose. Elena is trapped in a burning SUV with Stefan passed out in the trunk. Bonnie is able to reverse the spell and everyone is safe and Matt finally has his opportunity to say goodbye to his sister.

Katherine spent the episode trying to revive a sleeping vampire killer only to find herself a snack..is this lights out for Katherine?

And a guest appearance by Uncle Mason?  Looks like this season should have been called ‘the season of the anyone can return from the dead.’
