Bethesda’s Skyrim: Special Edition heads to retail later this week for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but you may feel rather shortchanged on release day if you were planning on getting the fantasy RPG on Sony’s device.
As reported by VG247, all three platforms will enjoy mod support on day one, but not in equal measure. File size restrictions have been put in place for both consoles, but while those on Xbox One can look forward to enjoying fan-created content up to the size of 5GB, PlayStation 4 owners will have to make do with the much smaller 1GB.
The reason? Unlike PC and Xbox One, PS4 has no access to non-native assets – i.e. only mods that are created using textures present in the base game can be downloaded and installed. That means no swords re-skinned to look like lightsabers or mods like this one.
The news follows several months of delays for mods on the PS4 version of Fallout 4, with Bethesda eventually confirming that they’d been cancelled altogether on Sony’s platform. That stance was quickly U-turned on, however, with the studio later confirming PS4 mod support for both titles.
Skyrim: Special Edition launches October 28 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC and features high resolution textures along with improved lighting and performance.
