Crafting The Perfect Final Fantasy Game

Posted January 27th, 2012 by Mike Niemietz

The Final Fantasy series is one of the most legendary game franchises of all time. It’s been around since the very first game graced the NES 25 years ago as a last ditch effort for Square Enix, then Squaresoft, to stay afloat. Hence the name Final Fantasy. Since then, the name has spawned more than 50 total games, two movies, a concert series and one of the most dedicated followings in all of the video game world.

As memorable as Final Fantasy is, none of the games are absolutely perfect. This got me to thinking: what if you took the best aspects of the games in the main numbered series, and made one super, awesome, franken-game with it?

So let’s have a little fun and figure out what really would make the perfect Final Fantasy game.

Best Video Games Of 2011

Posted December 25th, 2011 by Mike Niemietz

It’s been quite a legendary year for video games. We’ve seen phenomenal releases, stupid PR stunts, and entire communities of people turn on their source of entertainment. We’ve also seen greater disappointment than we’ve ever expected and come-from-behind victories for games we expected nothing from.

Starhawk Beta Impressions

Posted December 19th, 2011 by Mike Niemietz

There’s no shortage of online multiplayer shooters this season, but there is a glaring lack of inspiration in many of the online behemoths. There’s an overwhelming amount of “realistic” war shooters out there, and to many who can’t keep up, they’re just starting to all look the same. Sony hopes to break the monotony with the uniqueness of Starhawk.

The 2011 Spike Video Game Awards: A Retrospective

Posted December 13th, 2011 by Daniel Harper

After the train wreck that was the 2010 VGAs, Spike has attempted to fix all the issues that plagued the almost unwatchable show. Although we can debate whether this was actually an “award” show rather than one long trailer for upcoming blockbuster games, I do have to give them props for achieving a much higher level of quality in this year’s installment. As for analyzing the perfomance, the easiest way to break this down is to forget any kind of structure and just highlight the good, the bad, and the memorable.

Shrek: The Video Game – A Game of Sighs

Posted November 7th, 2011 by Nickolai

I told my editor about a month ago that I intended to start doing a segment where I reviewed the worst games in existence. He approved the idea and told me to get to it as soon as possible. The only issue was, I had absolutely no motivation to hunt down terrible games and play them. However, after a wonderful little chat concerning my paychecks and how I may not be seeing any more until I got to work on this section, I decided to hop to it.

[State Of The Game] This Is How You Take Out Frustration On A Broken TV

Posted October 26th, 2011 by Mike Niemietz

Recently, I was unfortunate enough to have my TV, which as anyone can imagine gets quite a bit of use given my profession of choice, die on me. A strange ailment of perfect sound, but no picture. My TV has since been fixed, but the two weeks I went without my games or Netflix was torture, and it’s about time I took it out on someone.

It’s been almost a week since Batman’s latest game released to widespread critical acclaim from both critics and fans of the DC superhero. [State Of The Game] Are The Gaming Retail Wars Returning?

Posted September 17th, 2011 by Mike Niemietz

Many gamers will remember the legendary rivalry between the two gaming retail giants: GameStop and EB Games. The sight of two massive corporations fighting to the death over your dollar is one of the single greatest things in the world for a consumer. This is why with the death of EB Games in October of 2005 when GameStop had simply swallowed its greatest enemy whole, gamers became worried. With no true competition as far as a retailer that does exclusively games, (not including websites, those are arguably much easier to manage,) trade-in values plummeted, GameStop’s cockiness became unbearable, and sales became infinitely less awesome as competition grew to be nearly non-existent.
