The Sundance Institute announced today the films that will be debuting at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in January. One of the films is Michael Rapaport’s documentary on the influential hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest called Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.

Stone’s Throw Records artist Madlib composed an original score for the film and the music was supervised by label-founder Peanut Butter Wolf. Rapaport reportedly traveled with the group for over two years, collecting over 200 hours of footage.

There are 15 other projects vying for the title of “Best U.S. Documentary”. However the Harry Belafonte film, “Sing Your Song” and the James Taylor and Carole King documentary, “Troubadours” are the only other entries in the competition focused on musicians.

Beats, Rhymes & Life will release in 2011. In the meantime, check out the trailer below and visit the movie’s official site for more information.

Update (Dec. 8th, 2010): Sorry, it looks like the trailer has been taken down by the request of the filmmakers. It was a leaked trailer that was supposedly made very early. Adding to the confusion was a joke title made by Rapaport, “Beats, Rhymes & Fights”, which also was shown at the end. This is not the real title of the film.
