The Last of Us keeps getting more and more interesting.

In its latest developer diary, Naughty Dog breaks down the combat system. While trying to really make humanity one of the focal points, a new style of AI is needed. The balance of power in situations is going to be on full display; if you walk in on a guy with your gun raised and he’s unarmed, he’ll react differently than if you were outnumbered and out gunned.

Ellie is also going to have a major impact in combat while still staying in character. Sure, a 14 year old girl won’t be a huge asset in a fight, but Ellie can try to help by tossing bricks at enemies to help out if you’re getting cornered.
