As of the last episode of The Vampire Diaries (and the last one we’re getting for a while), there are no happy couples in Mystic Falls – or even unhappy ones for that matter. For the first time in the memorable past, no one is really dating any one and it’s not for a lack of trying.
Caroline (Candice Accola) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) looked liked they had promising potential. They had natural chemistry that trumped any Matt – Tyler triangle that only momentarily caught our attention before fizzling. But, after Caroline’s betrayal in the last episode, it doesn’t look like this unholy union will be taking off. If we’ve learned anything about Klaus it’s that he takes trust very seriously – unless it comes to his own actions, as he somehow feels bound to a different set of rules. Klaus burning his many, many sketches (the jury is still out on whether this is creepy or romantic, or creepy romantic) of Caroline looked pretty final. Who knows what the future holds for the saucy duo, but right now, things appear dead in the water.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder) may have sealed his future without Elena (Nina Dobrev) when he turned Abby (Persia White) into a vampire. That is, even though this may have been the only option to stop the sacrifice. Since Abby is new to the mix, the repercussions this will have on Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Elena’s friendship are clearly not leaning toward positive territory. It still seems like cheating though. For two and a half years, the sexual tension between Damon and Elena has been building and finally we get an actual kiss that is not motivated by a death bed. Then there’s nothing. Before we get to explore this relationship, the writers have already taken it away from us. Despite the popular opinion that Elena belongs with Stefan (Paul Wesley), it would be nice to stick it to him and watch him suffer for his recent cold shoulder action – for just a bit.
Even after Elena made her super emotional plea for Stefan’s heart in Dangerous Liaisons, he is still living in the midst of denial. He is once again convinced that she is better off without him. Haven’t we already seen this act? It didn’t work out last time, so why would it stick now? The build up to a much awaited reunion is definitely there, but all evidence points to a decent sized wait.
With both Salvatore brothers deciding that neither one gets the girl, Elena is left available for someone to sweep her off her damaged feet. Wouldn’t that put some fire under someone else’s feet?
Apparently Alaric (Matt Davis) does have that bad of luck with women. He’s barely standing after a spat with an Original which left him with a broken rib. That, as well as a possible concussion from when the sexy psycho doctor (Torrey DeVitto) shot him point blank! If only she was supernatural and his ring would protect him, literally, from his most recent brush with heartbreaking level pain. First Isobel, then Jenna – this just can’t be natural.
There’s always Rebekah (Claire Holt) to consider. First, she strikes out with Stefan who is sort of the reason she missed the last 90 years of “living.” Then, she sets her sights on Matt (Zach Roerig), a fragile human, who ends up turning her down after a ball goes less than gallantly. And to finish out the trifecta, she spends one raunchy night with resident bad boy Damon in some misguided attempt on both of their parts to hurt Elena.
With all this unhappiness roaming around, it’s no wonder bad things keep happening. At this point, all we can do is cross our fingers and pout until The Vampire Diaries returns on March 15th!
