Konami has revealed that since launching Metal Gear on the MSX2 in both Japan and Europe in 1987, the Metal Gear series has gone on to sell a total of 31 million copies worldwide as of the end of 2011.

With 31 million under its belt and the original Metal Gear hitting its 25th anniversary, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down. Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D was recently released for the 3DS, and both the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for the Vita and Metal Gear Rising: Revengence for the Xbox 360 and PS3 are scheduled for release sometime during 2012. Additionally, a new Metal Gear Solid title is currently in development, however very little is know about the title outside of a job listing and some artwork.
