It’s A Good Time To Be A Fan Of Sniping Games

It is a good time to be a sniper fan. It wasn’t that long ago that the only way to get your sniping fix was to run around quick scoping in Call Of Duty or hang back in TF2 and hope to god a spy wouldn’t find you. Well, in the upcoming months we have not one but TWO realistic sniping games coming up. It’s enough to make me giggle like a school girl in anticipation, however I’ve been instructed to stop doing that in the WGTC bunker so I’m going to have to try and maintain myself.

I’ve touched upon my love of Sniper Elite in the past, but I will admit I’m hesitant to fall in love Sniper Elite V2 so far. Rebellion Games released a mini walkthrough of Flak Tower and I’m not quite sure what to think of it off hand.  As a history nerd, the detail going into recreating authentic places from WW2 has my attention, but I’m slightly worried that there may be more run-and-gun than I like my snipers doing.  The stealth aspect of the original Sniper Elite was a bit flawed, and I’d really be disappointed to see that mentality continue. However, if you preorder now you’ll get a few extras including a mission to kill Hitler himself.  There’s not part about that sentence that doesn’t sound amazing.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 doesn’t have quite the impressive lineage as Sniper Elite.  In fact, by all accounts, Sniper: Ghost Warrior was pretty bad.  However, it seems that City Interactive has taken the criticism to heart.  The run-and-gun action sequences have been all but removed and the on screen minimap has been completely retooled.  However, the biggest improvement is thanks to CryEngine 3, the enemy AI has been greatly improved to provide a more realistic experience.  Anyone who had hands on with the original Sniper: Ghost Warrior will attest to how needed and welcome this change is.

Sniper Elite V2 will be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in May with the PC version in the following weeks while Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 will be hitting the shelves in Summer 2012.  Which one are you more excited for?
