Despite the fact that I do not speak a word of French, I am struggling to find a trailer that has moved me as much as the first French language trailer for Jacques Audiard‘s Rust & Bone. This trailer is absolutely mesmerizing and has me completely hooked.
The film, which stars Cotillard alongside Bullhead star Matthias Schoaenarts, follows “the relationship between a homeless man (Schoeaenarts) and a trainer of killer whales in a sea park (Cotillard) who loses her legs in a horrific accident.”
The trailer creates a beautiful juxtaposition of imagery with deep symbolism that allows you to feel the emotional depths of this horrific story. What’s so amazing about it is that it does so without you having to understand a single word that is spoken. Furthermore, judging by what we see from Cotillard, this is going to be a big role for her and will likely earn her some Awards buzz.
A Cannes premiere seems almost certain for Rust & Bone, with the theatrical French release date set for May 17th, one day after festival starts. Keep your eye out for this one when the line up for The Cannes Film Festival is announced on April 19th.
