They grow up so fast, don’t they? One year they’re trying to be all innovative by coming out with a controller that everyone can use, and the next they’re catching up on the digital distribution bandwagon. Looks like Nintendo is planning for their digital downloads of games to be on the 3DS, as well as the recently announced plans for the Wii U.

The recently announced New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be the first in Nintendo‘s line of planned digital releases, according to an investor presentation. 3DS owners will be able to download the game on the eShop directly to their SD card. And for those who are worried about a lack of competition, Nintendo also plans to distribute codes to retail outlets so those who prefer to shop in stores and hunt for sales can do so.

Just remember, Nintendo, it’s not embracing digital distribution fully unless you discount the game digitally.

Me? I’ll stick to digital unless absolutely necessary. Or if the 3DS $40 games drop more than five bucks. That’d be nice too.
