Announced at CinemaCon, the film studio has confirmed the follow-up to Robert Pattinson’s debut outing as the Caped Crusader. Matt Reeves is confirmed to be returning as director and screenwriter as audiences prepare to descend back into the murky world of Gotham.

The Batman was a smash hit at the box office, grossing $750 million worldwide. Importantly, it was well-received by both fans and critics, with it sitting at 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Particular praise went to Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman, and its rendition of The Riddler with Paul Dano. The sequel being confirmed seemed to be a given, just pending the announcement which has now come.

It’s impact has also gone beyond just praise, with it setting in stone a few of 2022’s favourite memes. The Batman’s inclusion of Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” gave the song extra legs on Spotify, and ushered a wave of memes on TikTok.

Plot details and release date have not been discussed yet, but fan speculation will surely light up again with the announcement. Considering confirmations of a limited series about The Penguin, it could be seen as the leg-up to Colin Farrell being the antagonist for The Batman 2.

The Joker is another villain teased to take up the role of villain in a sequel, with Barry Keoghan cast as the clown prince of crime. Reeves has also said Keoghan could return in the planned Arkham Asylum series for HBO Max.
