Warning: This article contains massive spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
It’s not every day that someone can guess the actual plot of the movie based on the trailer alone, especially if all the details are kept as secret as Marvel likes to. But YouTuber MatPat, aka the host of Game Theory, Food Theory, and Film Theory, did the impossible and correctly guessed the entire plot of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ahead of its release.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
Back in January 2022, Film Theory released a video titled “Film Theory: You’re WRONG About Multiverse of Madness! (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). That video addressed the teaser trailer that was shown in Spider-Man: No Way Home and explained the possible plot direction that the Doctor Strange sequel was headed for.
This was during a time when the film had to switch directors and not much information was released on the film plot. And little did MatPat know he would get everything correct.
MatPat based all his Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness theory on the Marvel Comics, past MCU films, and politics and social movements that were occurring during the time of production. Some of his recent theories have been incorrect — he got the plot for Star Wars: Rogue One wrong, thought that Ravona Renslayer made the TVA in Loki, when in fact she’s just a human variant, and predicted that Dottie in WandaVision is Arcana Jones.
But it’s important to note that most of his theories in the past have been correct.
What was MatPat’s theory?
The YouTuber suggested that Doctor Strange will have to protect America Chavez, a young superheroine who doesn’t know how to use her powers. They will have to travel through the multiverse and maybe meet other Marvel characters and the Marvel Illuminati.
Meanwhile, Wanda Maximoff, aka The Scarlet Witch will have a sub-story plot of wanting to reunite with her children who appeared (and disappeared) in WandaVision.
“So, in a hypothetical scenario, where Doctor Strange is dealing with a teenage girl who can portal between universes, a Scarlet Witch who wants to rip universes apart to get her family back, and a multiverse Illuminati who thinks all of this is too dangerous and needs to be eliminated, sounds like suddenly we have Stephen able to apply the lessons that he learned from Spiderman.
He gets a do-over of sorts. All with a boatload of cameos and callbacks while setting up a compelling, extremely human, and morally complex storyline to ground the action in.”
Now, not everything he predicted was correct. He first thought that the major antagonist was going to be Strange Supreme, a Doctor Strange variant from What if…?, which was not entirely the case. He also thought that Strange Supreme would be the one unleashing the snakes that were seen in the first trailer, and believed that this Doctor Strange variant lost his hand.
At the same time, he was unsure if the Scarlett Witch was going to be the good guy or not, and was uncertain whether Tom Cruise appearing as an Iron Man variant was just a rumor or more.
Nevertheless, barring a few misconceptions, his theory was on point when it come to the film’s core plotline. Experience the plot for yourself by seeing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theaters now.
