Bane May Just Break The Bat In The Dark Knight Rises

Since the first full trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was released in December, there's been several hints that Christopher Nolan will finally kill off Batman in the film. In said trailer, Bane, the film's villain, says the following chilling line: " When Gotham is in ashes, you have my permission to die." 4 months later, the final trailer for the film was released, where Catwoman tells Batman, "You don't owe these people anymore. You've given them everything." Batman responds, "Not everything... not yet."

So, you thought you could escape the constant updates regarding The Dark Knight Rises, eh? Too bad. There’s still lots more to come… thankfully.

Since the first full trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was released in December, there’s been several hints that Christopher Nolan will finally kill off Batman in the film. In said trailer, Bane, the film’s villain, says the following chilling line: “When Gotham is in ashes, you have my permission to die.”

Four months later, the final trailer for the film was released, where Catwoman tells Batman, “You don’t owe these people anymore. You’ve given them everything.” Batman responds, “Not everything… not yet.”

Now, screenwriter David S. Goyer has left a subtle, yet chilling hint that is only making me more excited for this film. In talking to Empire magazine, Goyer had the following to say.

“The final scene of The Dark Knight Rises is exactly the scene that we talked about then,” says Goyer, speaking to Empire from his LA office almost four years later.  It remained completely unchanged. We both knew in our hearts that we were onto something special. I have to tell you, having finally seen everything strung together a little while ago and seeing that scene, I got a complete lump in my throat.”

Empire then decided to tug at Goyer just a bit more.

Empire: Nolan, it would seem, is committing commercial sacrilege.

Goyer: “Yup, that’s why it’s (frick)ing exciting!”

In every way, The Dark Knight Rises looks and sounds way better than its predecessor, and you can count on me being there when it opens. Spoiler-y hints like these would usually put me off the film, but in this case I’m more excited. After all, you can only keep details secret for so long, and it seems Goyer is aware that the speculation over the Bat’s supposed demise just keeps getting greater and greater.

The Dark Knight Rises will rise in theaters and IMAX on July 20th.
