Most people are familiar with the work of cinematographer Wally Pfister even if they’ve never heard his name before. He has had multiple collaborations with director Christopher Nolan on such great films as Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception, for which he took home an Oscar.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that this collaboration is to continue as Nolan, along with his wife/producing partner Emma Thomas, will be executive producing Pfister’s upcoming directorial debut.

The details of the film are being kept under wraps, but what do you expect from someone who has been working with Nolan this long? We do know that the film has been called “original and exciting” by Nolan and Thomas and that the screenplay is by newcomer Jack Paglen.

The only experience Pfister has had in the director’s chair has been to direct several commercials, but after seeing how brilliant he is at shooting Nolan’s films, I have little doubt that he will be able to handle a feature film easily.

Pfister’s work can be seen next in The Dark Knight Rises, which hits theaters on July 20, 2012.
