The mere suggestion of Taika Waititi directing ‘Superman’ causes an outpouring of indignation and fury

That'll be a "no," then.

Somewhere between the release of Thor: Ragnarok and the aftermath of sequel Love and Thunder, fans seemed to turn on Taika Waititi in fairly definitive fashion, to the extent that we’ve now reached a point where not only would people be genuinely pissed were he to return for another Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, but folks are hoping he becomes one of the near-20 filmmakers to be dumped by Star Wars.

At the end of the day, though, he’s still an Academy Award winner with a penchant for crafting heartwarming and hilarious offbeat comedies, so we’ll see how upcoming sports film Next Goal Wins fares. Regardless, DCU defenders on Reddit have made their thoughts perfectly clear on how they’d feel about Waititi becoming the latest MCU alumni to cross the great divide, with the mere suggestion of the Jojo Rabbit and Hunt for the Wilderpeople architect helming a new Superman flick generating an outpouring of fury and indignation.

It doesn’t even feel personal, if we’re being honest, because it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Waititi’s sensibilities are all wrong for the Big Blue Boy Scout. If James Gunn was offered Superman and turned it down because he knew he wasn’t the right fit for the material, then you imagine the former steward of Chris Hemsworth’s Odinson would be savvy enough to place himself in the exact same boat.

That doesn’t mean folks can’t get irritated and unreasonably angry about it, though, but even floating a hypothetical DC gig for Waititi has generated a reaction that makes it perfectly clear the fans don’t want him anywhere near the franchise.
