The typically reliable Latino Review is reporting that Marvel is set to announce a Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation at Comic-Con. The film would be their second release in 2014, fulfilling Marvel’s goal to release two installments in their Cinematic Universe each year. 2013 has already been confirmed to see Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, while the only confirmed film for 2014 so far has been Captain America 2.

Guardians of the Galaxy fills out the two-year slate, and according to Latino Review, will directly lead in to the 2015 release of The Avengers 2 (which sadly means Hulk won’t get a stand-alone film before the next team-up).

If you’re unfamiliar with the Guardians – and no one’s going to blame you if you are – Latino Review has a funny and succinct description of who they are and why you should be excited:

The Marvel comics universe is called 616. Long story, just accept it. The Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of superheroes from the future of Universe 691. There, an evil alien race called the Badoom is trying to take over the universe. And then the Badoom create the Korvac, and… don’t worry, we have until 2014 to slowly educate ourselves on Guardians of the Galaxy.

The important thing is, at some point, the Guardians get all time-hoppy and jet back to the 20th century (yes, 20th. Probably the 21st in the movie universe) to meet with the Avengers and fight some aliens.

I assume that’s where The Avengers 2 comes in. Latino also tells us that the film will feature Thanos – the villain featured in the Avengers’ mid-credits scene – and will introduce him for inclusion in the big sequel.

I’ll admit, I’d probably prefer it if Marvel took another couple of years and fleshed out the Cinematic Universe even more before returning to The Avengers, but no matter what, adding the Guardians to the line-up is a great and unexpected move. If the Avengers are going to be heading into space next time around, we’ll need at least one movie introducing the concept of galactic warfare, and Guardians of the Galaxy is the perfect way to do just that.

What do you think of the news? Does it get you even more pumped for Comic-Con than you were already? Sound off in the comments!
