DCU diehards draw swords over James Gunn resurrecting a long-forgotten fashion choice in ‘Superman: Legacy’

Superman's costumes have never exactly been chic, but it has it's charm.

Let’s face it, Superman doesn’t exactly have the best fashion sense in the comics. As such, his costume has had to undergo some tweaks to make it palatable to a modern audience, but fans would like to see one particular feature make a return to the Man of Steel’s cape.

Sometimes certain parts of a costume are changed, normally because they look too goofy for a live-action adaptation; think of the wings on Captain America’s helmet or Wolverine’s bright yellow spandex. When it comes to live-action some sacrifices must be made. From the red underwear that he sports on the outside of his pants to the yellow “S” on the back of his cape, no exceptions have been made for Superman.

Some fans would like to see the long lost yellow symbol on the back of Kal-El’s cape make a comeback in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy.

While it looks a little corny, perhaps it’s exactly the kind of colorful palette cleanser we need after Zack Snyder’s dark and grimm take on the character. Seriously, as great as Henry Cavill’s Superman was, there was hardly any color in his costume.

The fan reactions to the idea have been pretty much split with some saying they like the idea while others feel the symbol is redundant and makes the cape look worse.

One fan gave an interesting piece of trivia as to why it was removed in the first place.

Seeing this design return would be a great callback to Golden Age Superman. Although one thing we can give credit to Snyder for was removing the red underwear from the outside of the suit’; that design was worse than Kryptonite.
