As Zack Snyder’s troops mobilize once again, ‘Suicide Squad’ director is left to reflect on being sent death threats

The two sides of the toxic fandom coin are on full display.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the internet, Zack Snyder has popped up with a cryptic tease that’s sent the SnyderVerse fandom into meltdown once again.

Inevitably, there were instantaneous theories surmising that the obvious outcome of the “Save the Date” promo would be the reveal that the SnyderVerse has struck a deal with Netflix to continue, but we’re going to go out on a limb and say that most definitely is not going to turn out to be the case.

Whatever you think of the ongoing campaign – one that’s been rumbling on for well over half a decade at this point – the dedication of Snyder’s fans can’t be called into question. However, there are two sides to the coin of every fandom, and Suicide Squad director David Ayer has just made that perfectly clear.

Right around the same time Snyder’s cryptic announcement was generating waves of enthusiasm and excitement, Ayer’s more somber Twitter exchange underlined that those with a fondness for the very same mythology haven’t exactly been quite so kind to him on occasion.

While the filmmaker doesn’t outright name the project that led to him being sent death threats, you’d be willing to be money on it being Suicide Squad, seeing as it’s the most high-profile, expensive, and commercially successful outing in his career. It’s perfectly okay to dislike a movie, but actively wishing the worst upon the people who made it is several steps too far.

As much as that should go without saying, that’s sadly not how social media works.
