Critics are blasting The Walt Disney Company with accusations of discrimination over alleged double standards concerning the Jonathan Majors and Gina Carano scandals.
The media juggernaut is under fire in light of its inaction following Majors’ shocking arrest over allegations of intimate partner violence. Many people point to Disney’s seemingly swift dismissal of Carano from The Mandalorian after she repeatedly shared incendiary views on her social media accounts.
In truth, Disney did not immediately fire Carano when she began to court controversy with a series of cynical social media posts. Before Disney let her go in February 2021, she had posted a string of conspiracy theories about the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 presidential election, and the death of Jeffrey Epstein, as well as a series of glaringly transphobic tweets. However, the straw that broke the camel’s back was an Instagram post falsely equating being a conservative in modern America to the persecution of Jewish people during the Holocaust. The public drew Disney’s attention to her problematic social media posts by sharing screen captures of her inflammatory posts under the hashtag #FireGinaCarano. In the case of Carano, the evidence was irrefutable.
Some seemed oblivious to the passive-aggressive nature of Carano’s tweets even though they ticked several of the boxes on the Anti-Defamation League’s model of the dangerous biases preceding violence.
The opposite is true in the case of the Creed III star, as no evidence of his culpability has emerged. As things stand, only a few details have come to light about the incident. Majors’ attorney, Priya Chaudhry, claims that his accuser has withdrawn her accusations. Despite his arrest on suspicion of intimate partner violence, Majors retains the presumption of innocence until he is proven guilty of his alleged crimes in a court of law.
While it may seem that Disney was quick to act when it let Gina Carano go, the company gave her the latitude to express her opinions with impunity, and did not take action until the public demanded that they drop her. Disney will likely take the same cautious approach concerning Jonathan Majors since the future of one of its biggest franchises rests on his shoulders.
