Sony has confirmed via The Amazing Spider-Man Facebook page that the reboot of the web-slinging crime fighter is now part one of a trilogy.

News came in August of last year that Sony was already in talks to release a sequel by 2014, so this news isn’t all that surprising. But, due to the great opening that The Amazing Spider-Man had on Tuesday, the studio has announced today that there will, indeed, be a third film.

Below is the statement that they released:

“It’s finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero’s journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents.”

There is no word on whether Marc Webb will return to direct the sequel, stay on for the whole franchise, or not return at all, but you can expect an update on that shortly.

The Amazing Spider-Man is now playing in theaters nationwide and you can check out our review here.
