Secret Invasion is set to be unlike anything Marvel has done in its 15-year cinematic history. Centered around Nick Fury, shape-shifting Skrulls, and all the espionage therein — this Disney Plus show is bound to blow our minds.
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is certainly set to return, alongside co-star Ben Mendelsohn as Talos. One new cast member, however, has the fandom clawing for more details. In an interview with Vanity Fair, actress Emilia Clarke discussed her character G’iah (pronounced “Guy-ah”) and what fans can expect from the series. Playing the role of Talos’ daughter, Clarke seems to understand what having an alien refugee leader for a father would do to a person.
“It’s hardened her for sure. There’s a kind of punk feeling that you get from this girl. She’s a refugee kid who’s had Talos for a dad, you know what I mean? Maybe the fact that we didn’t know he had a kid up until this point tells you everything you need to know about their relationship.”
The relationship between Talos and G’iah is strained, to say the least. Following an extremist faction of Skrulls who have separated from their larger cohort, Secret Invasion will see Nick Fury and Talos try to keep the peace — all while attempting to decipher who the heck is whom. Which tends to happen when you deal with shape-shifting bad guys.
After the events of Captain Marvel, Fury committed to finding the Skrulls a new place to live. Fast forward 30-ish years, and he’s still looking. Emilia Clarke touched on this plot point in her interview, where we find out that certain Skrulls are fed up with all the empty promises.
“These people promised a lot of stuff a long time ago, and not a lot has happened. So understandably, a certain amount of resentment has been built. There’s a lot of emotions that live within her, and there’s a lot of confrontational aspects to her character that have come from circumstance. You understand why she has the feelings that she does.”
Also joining the cast is Kingsley Ben-Adir of One Night in Miami fame. Ben-Adir happens to be playing our heroes’ direct opposite as the Skrull radicalized faction leader Gravik. Trying to take intergalactic themes and make them approachable as a spy-centric thriller seems to be a tall order, but if anyone can do it — it’s the folks at Disney.
Whether it’s Secret Wars, Secret Invasion, or Secret Santa, Marvel is no stranger to keeping things under wraps. Little else is known about the upcoming series, but with its June 21 release date, we won’t have to wait much longer for the chaos.
