John Wall Or Blake Griffin?

This year’s first overall selection John Wall and last year’s first overall pick Blake Griffin are both rookies in the 2010-2011 season. Although this same event occurred with Rose and Oden, it is still rare for two first overall picks to experience their rookie year together. Wall is a speedy point guard with fast hands and faster feet. Griffin is a strong power forward with thunderous dunks and a great mid-range jump shot. Who is better?

This year’s first overall selection John Wall and last year’s first overall pick Blake Griffin are both rookies in the 2010-2011 season. Although this same event occurred with Rose and Oden, it is still rare for two first overall picks to experience their rookie year together. Wall is a speedy point guard with fast hands and faster feet. Griffin is a strong power forward with thunderous dunks and a great mid-range jump shot. Who is better?

John Wall has been hurt early in his rookie season, but through 12 games he has played almost 38 minutes per game with just over 17 points, 8 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals per game. Blake Griffin has played and started all 20 games this season amassing over 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.

Although Griffin seems to have better stats thus far, stats are not the only indicator of a player’s skill or value. Currently the Washington Wizards don’t have a great record at 6-12, but it is better than the league worst 4-16 held by the L. A. Clippers. A team’s record is not necessarily indicative of either Wall or Griffin’s abilities, but the first overall pick has to have a positive impact on the team.

Who is better, Wall or Griffin? Right now it is neck and neck and anything could happen in the long run. If I had to pick one today to put on my team, I would have to take John Wall. Along with the fact that great point guards are harder to find than great power forwards and point guards make the entire team better, Wall is younger that Griffin and shows more upside. Down the road look for both of these players to play in all-star games and possibly become NBA MVPs.
