With Renfield hitting theaters tomorrow, it won’t be any surprise to see an influx of newfound love for Count Dracula after watching Nicolas Cage put the spin of a lifetime on the classic monster.
But one question that just may follow afterward is whether a more faithful version of the character can have as impactful of an effect, and based on the trailer for Universal’s next take on the vampire lord, that’s exactly what The Last Voyage of the Demeter looks hellbent on delivering.
Based on the chapter “The Captain’s Log” from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the plight of the crew of the Demeter, a merchant ship tasked with carrying private cargo from Carpathia to London. When one of the Demeter’s many crates turns out to house a horrifying, bloodsucking menace, the amount of time that the crew have left in the world seems to dwindle quite rapidly.
The film stars Corey Hawkins (The Walking Dead), Aisling Franciosi (God’s Creatures), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), and David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad, Ant-Man series of films) as members of the Demeter’s crew, while the six-foot-seven Javier Botet (The Mummy, Slender Man, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), will portray Dracula.
The shadowy storm of the high seas coupled with Dracula’s depiction as a spine-chilling monstrosity is certainly a far cry from the New Orleans-wide romp of cheeky douchebaggery that Cage will be serving up this weekend, and while comparisons will be unavoidable, The Last Voyage of the Demeter looks all but ready to bask in its own uniquely morbid spotlight, and we can’t wait to see if this particular rendition of the Demeter’s crew have better luck than their literary counterparts.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter will release to theaters on August 11.
