An upcoming vampire movie earns comparisons to a cursed sci-fi sequel

We would have to see to find out.

Not long after Renfield landed, fans of Dracula are soon going to be treated to another promising film starring the Lord of Darkness. Based on a chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter will revolve around the terrifying journey of the titular merchant ship Demeter from Carpathia to London as doom befalls the crew of the ship due to Dracula’s ominous presence.

The movie’s trailer, which was released on April 13, is already drawing comparisons to other horror franchises, one of which is unlikely, to say the least. Reddit user nerdywithchildren couldn’t shake the feeling that they were watching a retread of the plot from Alien 3, of all things.

Speaking of how heavily the upcoming flick might be influenced by Alien 3 based on these very scenes from the trailer, he wrote, “Dog is first victim: check Person who owns dog has blood dripping on their face: check Isolated on a ship with all males except one female: check Looks like they even try to trap it. Maybe it’s just the trailer, but I think this movie is heavily influenced by Alien 3.”

Of course, the statement was met with customary agreements and disagreements. One response concurred with the Alien 3 reading, saying, “It’s worth noting that the film is an adaptation of one of the chapters in Bram Stoker’s Dracula that tells the story of how Dracula came to England and killed off the crew of the ship, but the influence of stories like Alien 3 is definitely in the trailer.”

How the comparisons stack up when release day rolls around remains to be seen, and there’s still plenty of time to speculate until then.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter arrives in theaters on Aug. 11, 2023.
