James Gunn’s creepy ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ BTS look could come straight from a horror movie

Is 'Guardians 3' a horror movie?

Need something creepy and unsettling in your life? Boy does Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 director James Gunn have something for you. The eclectic DC Boss shared a really creepy image from the set of the movie, and it looks like a haunted house merged with a nightmare. That sounds redundant, but when you see the picture, you’ll understand.

Gunn has never been shy about sharing BTS clips from his movies, but this one just strikes a decidedly different tone. If the storied director didn’t specifically tag the new Guardians movie it could very well be from a horror film. In the pic, there are three actors in makeup, silhouetted against a bright white background that resembles the opening to a tent.

Apparently they’re called Humanimals. Take a look:

Spooky right? Not the first thing you wanna see in the morning or late at night, for that matter. Not quite sure who the Humanimals are? They are the residents of Halfworld, which is Rocket’s home planet where he was experimented on to become a powerful biological weapon.

Some backstory: One side of the planet Halfworld is green and lush and the other is 100% industrialized. The planet is considered an important part of the Kree Empire, and was expected to help the army with its experiments. Animals were captured with “their brains augmented with A.I. and their bodies physically enhanced. A rare few even gained sentience, which created several violent incidents and at least one reported escape.”

Wonder who that was. We are reportedly going to get quite a bit of Rocket’s origin story in the new film, so the appearance of the Humanimals makes sense. Turning them into props for what looks like a horror movie? That’s just Gunn knowing how to drum up publicity for his movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 hits theaters on May 3.
