James Gunn discusses ‘the sweetest part of filmmaking’ ahead of ‘Guardians Vol. 3’ L.A. premiere

An emotional moment for everyone involved in the 'Guardians' franchise.

James Gunn has a lot to look forward to as the new DCU boss, but saying goodbye to the Guardians of the Galaxy, which essentially kickstarted his superhero career, must be giving him a bit of heartache.

It has been a long journey for Gunn and the Guardians, but it’s all coming to a conclusion in the third movie of the saga. The MCU has also made it no secret that the threequel will bring an end to this trilogy, and though some survivors might continue to appear in future movies — like the two planned Avengers sequels — this is goodbye as far as some of them are concerned, namely Dave Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer and Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora.

Now, the director has taken to Twitter ahead of tonight’s L.A. premiere to reflect on this journey. He also called this stage “the sweetest part of filmmaking,” where they get to have one final look at the movie before turning it over to the world. In his own words:

For his MCU fans, the filmmaker will regrettably have his plate full with DC projects in the foreseeable future, though neither he nor Marvel Studios have ruled out a possible return somewhere down the line. Besides, Gunn is a prolific producer, so he might just be able to juggle both universes at once if he really decides to put his heart to it.

As for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the story is supposedly focusing on Rocket’s dark past, but if the trailers are anything to go by, this is essentially a love letter to the entire team. The Benatar crew is also going toe-to-toe with Adam Warlock, which is a confrontation that has been hyped up since the second movie came out in 2017.

You can catch Vol. 3 on the big screens come May 5.
