Pascal won the “Best Hero” award for his role as Joel Miller in HBO’s The Last of Us. According to Variety, he, along with the other nominees, was unable to attend the event due to the ongoing writers’ strikes. This meant that a “pre-taped” special was broadcast due to some attendees “pulling out” from the event.

A video message from the Chilean-born actor was shared on the official MTV Movie & TV Awards Twitter page, where he gave his gratitude to both MTV and his fans who voted for him and that it blew his mind that millions of people voted this year.

“This means the absolute world to me. The people of MTV told me that 77.5 million people voted this year, which blows my mind and makes this such an honor. I wish we could all be together so I could look into your eyes and tell you that all the young people in the world are my heroes. And I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.”

Alongside his thank-you message, Pascal addressed the ongoing issues that young people currently face in America in regard to their rights. He stated that they deserve a world where they feel safe and acknowledged by others since he sees the younger generation as “the real heroes.”

“I want to say that you deserve a world that serves your interests. You deserve to be healthy. You deserve to be safe. You deserve your individual rights to be fought for and protected. You deserve real heroes in this world because you are real heroes to me.”

Pascal was up against Diego Luna in Disney’s Andor, Jenna Ortega in Netflix’s Wednesday, Paul Rudd in Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick. Asides from “Best Hero”, The Last of Us also won “Best Show” and “Best Duo” with Bella Ramsey in this year’s awards ceremony.

If you want to see what made Pascal deserve the “Best Hero” award, season one of The Last of Us is available to stream on HBO Max.
