Who does Bill Burr play in ‘Barry?’

The stand up comic and actor made an appearance in HBO's dark comedy series - but where, and how, exactly?

The fourth, final, and increasingly morbid season of HBO’s Barry has had its fair share of guest appearances to help send off the titular hitman trying to turn over a new leaf. However, one particularly recognizable name popped up in the credits of Sunday night’s episode that you may have missed as “the wizard” unfolded – that being none other than comedian and The Mandalorian regular, Bill Burr.

However, Burr’s appearance wasn’t quite as pronounced as other guest stars that have appeared in the season so far. Guillermo Del Toro and Sian Heder’s cameos were pretty upfront – with the former playing a crime boss named “Toro” and the latter, a fictional version of herself. Burr, however, was nowhere to be seen on screen. So – where was he, exactly? How did Bill Burr fit into the narrative of Barry? Read on and find out.

Fans of Burr’s who listen to his ever-popular Monday Morning Podcast probably picked his presence in the show almost straight away, while folks who are more familiar with the star’s face could have missed his appearance quite easily. While Barry travels back to Los Angeles with the intention of killing Gene Cousineau, he listens to multiple podcasts by preachers who discuss the subject of murder, and seeks divine validation for the deed he intends to commit.

Bill Burr plays a pastor who hosts one of these podcasts, Nick St. Angelo. Interestingly enough, St. Angelo who ultimately ends up validating Barry’s desire to kill Cousineau, with the comedian delivering his theological justification of murder with supreme confidence, the kind that Burr exudes in his real-world podcast. Of course, within the narrative of Barry, the voice of Bill Burr hosting a preachy, religious (and morally shaky) podcast is quite an amusing prospect for fans of the stand-up comic.
