Another ‘Mean Girls’ star teases their return to the franchise in musical adaptation

The 'Mean Girls' musical movie may be adding another original star to its cast.

The Mean Girls musical movie might be adding an original cast member to its line up. That’s right, Aaron Samuels himself – Jonathan Bennett – has hinted that he’ll be back for the musical that’s slated to air on Paramount Plus.

The 2004 comedy classic, about a homeschooled girl (Lindsay Lohan) encountering the social norms of public school for the first time, inspired a hit Broadway musical which is now in turn being turned into a movie starring Spider-Man‘s Angourie Rice, Moana‘s Auliʻi Cravalho, and Reneé Rapp, who played Regina George on Broadway and will be reprising her role in the movie. Bennett was in attendance at the GLAAD Media Awards, and when asked by People for comment on the musical, he commented, “There’s some talks going on about certain things. Let’s just say that.”

Bennett also took the time to praise the film for its anti-bullying message. “It made people realize what bullying was in high school. And in a lot of ways, I think Mean Girls is the first movie that actually showed what bullying was and brought it to light,” he said. “But they used comedy with Tina Fey’s amazing writing to be able to talk about it. And I think it was an important movie for so many reasons, but for to bring light to bullying.”

Exactly which cast members will be returning is up in the air at the moment. Negotiations with Paramount have reportedly stalled due to what the cast feels is a ‘disrespectful’ amount of compensation on offer. Reportedly, creator Tina Fey will be back, but the principal cast of Mean Girls, including Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert, have yet to sign on.
