‘Fast X’ director teases sneaky ‘Back to the Future’ Easter Egg

They've been to space, could time travel be next?

Fast X is so close we can practically smell the gasoline, and ahead of the film’s general release, Director Louis Leterrier spoke about the little time travel Easter egg he managed to sneak into the film.

Leterrier sat down with Collider to discuss the tenth movie in the seemingly never-ending Fast and Furious franchise. The director discussed what it was like to direct the grand conclusion as well as his decision to include a nod to the Back to the Future franchise by featuring a DeLorean Alpha 5 prototype. The car is a more updated model than the version most fans are used to seeing from the classic ‘80s franchise.

After the gang went to space in F9, time travel doesn’t even sound that far fetched, though for now, ant least, it’s not going to be an actual plot device.

“they thought that after going to space, we’re going to do time travel. [Laughs] So like, after space travel was going to be time travel. And then I was like, “Oh, I will have people go crazy by having the DeLorean pull up with shoes that look like futuristic shoes come out,” and then I was like, “Oh yeah, let’s have fun with it all.””

When asked whether it was tough to get the car featured in the film, the director said that it took a few calls. Turns out there aren’t many DeLorean companies, but if any film was within a shot of getting such a car on screen, it would be the Fast franchise.

“I mean, it’s Fast & Furious, so, you know, it’s the car movie. You have to call a few people. The DeLorean is complex, it’s finding who are the right – there’s like two DeLorean companies, so we got the one and it was great.”

While it’s definitely a cool car to feature in the film, sadly, there will be no time travel involved in Fast X. The franchise may have abandoned any semblance of reality but we’re not quite there yet.

Fast X releases in theaters May 19.
