James Gunn outlines his credentials for being the perfect person to take the DCU forward

Gunn's position suggests we're living in an extraordinary era.

It’s no secret that James Gunn, one of the new co-heads of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, knows a thing or two about crafting a top-notch comic book adaptation. Having gone three for three on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy along with his successful first foray into DC with The Suicide Squad and spinoff series Peacemaker, it’s safe to say that Gunn probably knows what he’s doing.

But the most essential ingredient to any winning recipe, no matter the size, is confidence; if you don’t know your own strength, chances are you’re not going to lean into it.

Luckily, it looks like Gunn isn’t lost on his own talents in the slightest; in fact, it sounds like he himself knows he’s the best for the job as any one of us would. In a recent interview with El País, Gunn pointed out just how incredibly unique his position within DC Studios is, and how his acclamation to such a position was a no-brainer for him.

I don’t think there’s ever been a storyteller in charge. It’s unprecedented. No one in the history of Hollywood has ever had an opportunity to tell the biggest story ever told across television, film and games, to have that type of creative outlet. So how the f*** could I say no?

Indeed, he may share top-dog status with Safran, but the fact that Gunn, a first-rate creative/mad genius by trade, is at the most lucrative helm of a DC Comics cinematic universe speaks volumes about not only the potential of the new DC Universe, but also of Gunn’s already very obvious capabilities.

Granted, maybe it’s a bit disheartening that we live in a world where a professional storyteller pulling the storytelling strings is such a mind-blowing nuance, but we’re going to take all the wins we can get. If Gunn is bold enough to kick off the DCU with a Creature Commandos animated series, we can probably rest assured that the days of trite superhero fiction are numbered.

Creature Commandos will arrive on Max sometime in 2024.
